Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Both platforms power millions of online stores — but they suit very different businesses. Here's how to choose the right one for yours.

Shro Web · 18 February 2026

Shopify and WooCommerce are the two dominant e-commerce platforms for UK businesses in 2026. Both are excellent — but they suit different types of business, budget, and long-term strategy. Here's a straight comparison to help you decide.

Shopify: the managed platform

Shopify is a fully hosted, all-in-one platform. Hosting, security, updates, and payment infrastructure are all handled for you. You pay a monthly fee (from £25/month) plus transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments.

Shopify is best for:

  • Businesses that want to focus on selling, not managing servers
  • Fast-growing stores that need reliable infrastructure
  • Teams with limited technical resource
  • Businesses that want excellent built-in analytics and POS

Watch out for: ongoing platform fees, transaction fees, and the cost of premium apps that can add up quickly. Shopify also limits what you can customise at the checkout without Shopify Plus.

WooCommerce: the open-source platform

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. There are no platform fees and no transaction fees — you own the code completely. You'll need to manage your own hosting, security, and updates.

WooCommerce is best for:

  • Businesses that want full code ownership and flexibility
  • Complex product catalogues or unusual checkout requirements
  • Existing WordPress sites that need e-commerce added
  • Businesses with a developer who can manage the platform long-term

Watch out for: the overhead of platform management. A poorly maintained WooCommerce site is a security risk. You need good hosting and regular updates.

So which should you choose?

If you want a smooth, managed experience and your requirements are relatively standard — choose Shopify.

If you need deep customisation, want to avoid monthly fees, or you're already on WordPress — choose WooCommerce.

We build both, and we'll always recommend the platform that suits your specific business — not the one that's easier for us. Talk to us and we'll help you decide.
